August Journaling Prompts: 31 Days of Reflective Writing & Free PDF
A free printable calendar and 31 daily prompts for a more intentional August
June and July’s prompt calendars went down incredibly well, so thank you to everyone who took the time to share their feedback.
A quick note before you start: These prompts are not the same as working with a Journal Therapist.
There is no practitioner holding the space and no structure built around you personally.
What they are is an invitation to slow down and write, five minutes, a notebook, and a little honesty with yourself. That small act of getting your thoughts onto the page creates what is called Narrative Distance. A bit of breathing room between you and the noise of the day.
Using These Prompts
Download and print, or save to your device and write directly into your journal or notebook. Either works.
A few things worth knowing:
Go at your own pace. Missed three days? Four? It doesn’t matter. The prompts will still be here when you are ready.
Skip what doesn’t fit. These are written for a general audience, not specifically for you. If a prompt doesn’t land, leave it and move on.
Write honestly. Nobody is reading this. Nobody is marking it. The only person you owe clarity to is yourself.
See where they take you. Often once you start writing the thoughts start to open up and the pen keeps moving. If this happens, go with it. Don’t be limited by the prompts, use them as a springboard.
Week 1 (Sat 1 – Sun 9):
Slow Down
Permission to be fully in summer. Present, unhurried.
August 1 What do you want to remember about this summer?
August 2 What does it feel like to simply be where you are right now, without thinking ahead or looking back?
August 3 What is the most restful thing you have done recently? Did you let yourself enjoy it?
August 4 What is your favourite summer memory, from any point in your life?
August 5 What small summer pleasure have you not made time for yet that you still could?
August 6 Plan your perfect day entirely for yourself. Where would you go? What would you do? No restrictions.
August 7 What is something you have been meaning to do for yourself that keeps getting pushed to the bottom of the list?
August 8 Close your eyes. Take three slow, deep breaths and drop your shoulders. Now write, how do you feel right now compared to five minutes ago?
August 9 When did you last sit in silence, for ten minutes or more, without reaching for something to fill it? What comes up when you do?
Week 2 (Mon 10 – Sun 16):
Look Back
A gentle review of the year so far.
August 10 What did you try this year that didn't go to plan? What did it show you?
August 11 What has quietly changed in you since January, so gradually you almost didn't notice?
August 12 What were you worried about at the start of this year that you can now see differently?
August 13 Who has shown up for you this year in a way that mattered?
August 14 If you could send a note back to yourself on 1 January, what would it say?
August 15 What do you want the last four months of the year to feel like? Not achieve, feel.
August 16 What is one thing you set out to do this year that you still have time for?
Week 3 (Mon 17 – Sun 23):
Look Forward
Personal goals, quiet ambitions, what you want the rest of the year to feel like.
August 17 What would you regret not starting before December?
August 18 What does a good end to this year look like for you, personally?
August 19 What one small change would make the rest of the year feel more like yours?
August 20 What do you need to let go of to make space for what is coming?
August 21 If the rest of this year had a theme, what would you want it to be?
August 22 What are you looking forward to in the next few months, genuinely and specifically?
August 23 What feels possible right now that didn't feel possible six months ago?
Week 4 (Mon 24 - Sun 30):
Turning Toward
Energy returning, thoughts beginning to gather, quiet optimism.
August 24 Who do you want to spend more time with as the year draws in?
August 25 What project, idea or goal is quietly asking for your attention?
August 26 What would you do differently in the next three months if you treated them as a fresh start?
August 27 What would it feel like to go into September feeling ready rather than rushed?
August 28 List ten things you know to be true about yourself that you sometimes forget.
August 29 If August had a theme, what would it be?
August 30 Write ten words that describe how you feel right now. Don't think about it, just write.
Final Day · August 31:
Forward
August 31 September is almost here. What do you want to take with you, and what are you ready to leave in the summer?
You don’t have to answer perfectly. You just have to be honest with yourself. That is enough.
You can download your own copy to print and include in your journal, sit on your desk or to keep handy on your device.

I genuinely hope you enjoy these prompts and that they give you a little more headspace as we move through the month.
Before you go…..
Curious about what journal therapy actually looks like with a practitioner?
There are a few ways to explore it, depending on where you are right now.
If you want a gentle starting point, Pocket Sanctuary is a good place to begin. It features five days of structured journaling prompts delivered to your inbox each morning, with a personal reply from me at the end of each day, after you send me your reflections (not your actual writing, but how you felt and what you uncovered). No prior experience needed.
Find out more and secure your place here.
If you want to go deeper, you can see the full range of support available, from workbooks through to 1:1 sessions on my website.
Until next time,
